As the saying goes: “A jack of all trades, but a master of none”. The puzzles never quite reached the level you’d expect from a Zelda game combat was a lot of fun, but its depth was wasted on simple enemy design, and platforming sequences rarely required much thought or precision timing. An extremely derivative mix of The Legend of Zelda and God of War, with tossed in elements from other big names such as Gears of War, Prince of Persia , and even Portal, Darksiders was never more than the sum of its parts. It’s somewhat ironic that the future of the franchise is unsure, as the games themselves were never really completely sure as to what they wanted to be either. But all is not lost for this under-appreciated, yet flawed, action gaming gem.

However, it was not meant to be: Darksiders and a number of another IPs were swooped on by little-known Nordic Games, an Austrian publisher with few releases but now holding a lot of big names. For a while it seemed like the series would fall far short of its ambitions to become a long-standing franchise on its own, having only released the second game in what was likely to have been four or more. Following the collapse of THQ, developer Vigil Games was disbanded and its staff forced to find new homes as the publisher sorted out its financial affairs, including the auction of its IPs such as Darksiders. Many of Vigil’s employees ended up with the newly-formed Crytek USA, which planned to bid for the rights to continue the series.

In the words of Family Guy: Something, something, something Darksiders.ĭarksiders is a franchise in doubt.
